Witch Clans: Familiars

No one knows how familiars or magical animals gained the ability to speak. They only know that they did. Many theories have been thrown around over the eons everything from Aine bestowing it to watch over witches, to magic being infused into them during a war-changing them, to being decedents of witches who learned to shapeshift and breed with animals. Whatever the truth they play an important part in witch society and also have the power to shift from human form to animal.

Some feel a pull a connection that comes from somewhere to seek out something and that something is the witch they were born to assist in life. Once a magical animal is a bond to someone in a clan it seems that all animals of that kind are bound to that clan meaning only witches from that clan have that type of familiar. There are some strange cases mostly involving those who are bound to the world, not by the clan. Where it is the clan the universe feels most correct for their connection or concepts because the animal may be bond to either their first lives clan or current lives clan.

The animal will know it's witch when they see it for they are connected in a way that one can't explain to those who have never witnessed such a connection. It is said by some they are an extension of the witch themselves, a piece of their soul. This allows them to aid the witch and to channel their powers if need be or to allow the witch to summon them. They are their friends, companions, and helpers throughout their lives. As close as siblings but something deeper than even than that.
